Teaching

In her thirty-eight years as a teacher, Judy has taught middle and high school students in the urban South, first generation and adult college students in the rural southwest, and graduates of elite prep schools in the Northeast.

These different experiences have left her with a keen appreciation for how the learning process works and a commitment to providing multiple and varied opportunities for students to succeed.

Judy approaches every teaching day as an opportunity to learn something new. In undergraduate and graduate classes focused on the History of Slavery, Childhood, Abraham Lincoln, Civil War, and Reconstruction, Judy works to teach her students how to think historically, hone research and writing skills, rethink assumptions they have about the past, and to take intellectual risks.

Judy is a proud recipient of the Tolle Lege Award for Teaching Excellence.
